Algonquin Lakes Tour

September 24 to 26, 2018

Highlights

Beautiful fall foliage, rocks, and lakes of Algonquin Park, one of Canada’s most renowned parks.  The scenery has inspired artists and we will see the cairn to Tom Thomson, the famous painter, and discuss his life and death.  As well we will visit the Algonquin Park Visitor’s Centre and the Logging Museum.

Day 1, Canoe Lake

We start at the parking lot at the south side of Highway 60.  We go through Smoke, Tea, and Bonita Lake to Canoe Lake.  Here we visit Tom Thomson’s impressive cairn and monument.  Between Canoe Lake and Joe Lake there is a portage.  From there we go pass Gibraltar Rock overlooking Joe Lake and stop at a lunch spot; we hope to have lunch at the Arowhon Pines Lodge.  We return via the same route in reverse.  The total distance is about 28 km.

Days 2 and 3, Madawaska River

We row down the Madawaska River through Lake of Two Rivers, Pog Lake, Whitefish Lake, Rock Lake, and Galeairy Lake to Whitney over the two days.  We will stop to see the derelict estate of J.R.Booth, lumber king.  There are two short portages around low dams.  The total distance is about 30 km.
